Travel Diary: Beachside Ayurveda at Siddhalepa Ayurveda, Sri Lanka
Located in the pearl of the Indian Ocean and voted the number one travel destination in 2019, the island of Sri Lanka has been on my list of places to visit for a while now.
So when Siddhalepa Ayurveda invited me to attend their very first Ayurveda Symposium, a joint collaboration with Tourism Sri Lanka and the wonderful Sri Lanka Airlines, it was a sure yes to attend.
During the five day Symposium, I was fortunate to stay at the Siddhalepa Resort in Wadduwa, beautifully situated amongst tropical gardens and scenic southern coast belts of Sri Lanka.
Sparkling blue waters, the sound of crashing waves from my room, friendly locals, unlimited coconuts and the biggest swimming pool I think I’m yet to come across at a resort, Siddhalepa went way beyond my expectations.
Recently renovated and upgraded as a four star plus resort, the Siddhalepa Ayurveda group are abundantly generous, gracious and professional, proving to be leaders in Ayurvedic medicine in both Sri Lanka and worldwide.
Dr. Hendrick de Silva Hettigoda, a fifth generation Ayurvedic doctor, pulse expert and renown kidney specialist, together with his family have paved the way for Siddhalepa to heal people through both this resort as well as an Ayurveda Hospital in Mount Lavinia.
Resort & Accommodation
Just looking around you will discover that you are surrounded by age old traditions, not just in the Ayurveda therapies, but also in the architecture. The entire resort and its 50 airy and spacious rooms are uniquely designed in an artistic combination of traditional motifs and contemporary styles.
Siddhalepa is created to melt into the natural environment using local materials and aesthetics, traditional terracotta tiled roofs, hand hewn stone walls, medicinal wood floors and water features, reminiscent of ancient abodes yet still with the luxuries of today.
Situated over 7 acres on sands of Wudduwa Beach, the gardens are truly beautiful. It is here they grow all of their medicinal plants and trees providing a natural haven to relax and heal in.
Restaurant & Food
The resort has two restaurants, the Madura Bojun Hala being the main one offering panoramic views overlooking Wuddawa beach. you are blessed with an array of food choices from Ayurvedic for those on a specific health program or non-Ayurvedic including world-class seafood, chicken and sweets. There was certainly an abundance of food.
All meals come with unlimited warm water, coconut water and custom Siddhalepa herbal teas.
Consultations & Treatments
Siddhalepa is home to 7 Ayurvedic doctors, both male and female, young and old. Senior doctors are able to consult though pulse diagnosis, others through question and answer. After an initial consultation, treatments are prescribed daily.
Most traditional Ayurvedic treatments are available at the resort including Abhyanga massage, herbal baths, Shirobasti, Shirodhara and Kativasti as well as face, head and foot massages. Resident Ayurveda packages ranging 1 week to 4 week treatments are also available for you to choose from.
All treatments use the Siddhalepa branded products and oils prepared at their local factory and laboratory in Mount Lavania. None of the formulations from Siddhalepa Ayurveda have ever been changed in 86 years of business adding more value to its Ayurveda family background exceeding 200 years.
The Siddhalepa Gift shop has a wonderful selection of products including dietary supplements, herbal teas, tonics and elixrs, cosmetics and dental care, baby care, oils and balms for you to take home or buy as gifts.
I was very impressed with my consultations from the doctors daily, and when I was bitten overnight by some sort of Sri Lankan insect causing by big toe to swell up, the attention and care from all staff was above and beyond. With the application of a special Siddhalepa Ayurvedic oil, I was healed in no time!
Additional Facilities
Yoga, meditation and cooking classes are available at the resort and included in the Ayurvedic packages. Most guests preferred to laze by the pool, read a book or watch the aphrodisiac sunsets by the beach every evening, coconut in hand.
