Ayurveda is the oldest health science in the world today, deriving from India thousands of years ago.
The word Ayurveda is from the Sanskrit word, ayur meaning ‘life’ and veda meaning ‘science.’ Together, a complete body of knowledge about how to achieve health and longevity through the union of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance.
Its tools include diet and lifestyle guidance, herbal medicine, treatments and detoxification programs together with a yoga and meditation practice.
With increased awareness and understanding of your unique self and the environment around you, you can begin to incorporate these simple tools to support balance and move away from the things that cause imbalance.
the doshas
Ayurveda identifies five elements that make up all of creation and the universe. These are Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Ether (Space). These five elements are also made up in the human body through three governing energies known as doshas.
Vata (Air and Space)
Pitta (Fire and Water)
Kapha (Water and Earth)
Each one of us has all three doshas present inside of us, one or two is more dominant than another and determines our physical and mental characteristics. We also have tendencies towards different imbalances depending on which dosha is predominant in us.
With an understanding of our doshas, we are able to keep these energies in a balanced state and live in a healthy way through diet, lifestyle, exercise and stress management techniques.
